The Cats of Ulthar

As a guy who spends most of his days sat at a desk I need a lot of stuff to listen to while I work. So as I am also fan of weird-fiction author HP Lovecraft Ive been spending a lot of time listening to the excellent HP Podcraft podcasts which cover his work story-by-story (link here) and has helped while-away many-an-hour.
So I decided to maybe work on a few Lovecraft-inspired illustrations, here is the first.
The Cats of Ulthar definitely isn't my favourite story (in fact I don't even actually like it) but I thought it would make a nice creepy little illo in the run up to Halloween.

Lonesome George - a a tribute

Sad to hear that Loneseome George, the last of the Pinta Island giant tortoises has died. He was the last of his kind and had been described as the 'rarest creature on the planet'.
I have a great interest in the natural world and find it really upsetting to think of an entire species (in this case sub-species) gone forever.
Heres a little tribute to old George.

Fireflies! Ipad/Iphone game

I was asked by SoMuchDrama Studios to produce the artwork for their upcoming iPhone/iPad game - Fireflies! Its a fun little journey through a series of nighttime forests where the aim is to catch as many fireflies as possible, the gameplay, graphics and sound all combine to give it a tranquil, almost calming quality.
The game launched today and is available in iTunes/app store. Go and take a look here

Here are a few pieces of art from the game ...

Target StoryBook Station - LA Times Festival of Books 2012

At the end of last year I was lucky enough to be asked again to produce some illustrations for the Target Stage/Storybook Stations at the LA Times Festival of Books (as well as the Washington and Minneapolis book festivals). You can see my work for the 2011 festivals here.

The brief was to create a variety of scenes in a miniature garden world, where families were enjoying reading together. This time the job presented a few challenges - it came with a really tight turnaround time which required me working through the Christmas holidays, the characters and scenes had to fit seamlessly into the same world as my previous illustrations from last years festival and this time it all needed to be vector! (opening Illustrator usually makes me break out into a cold sweat!).

However despite this they turned out to be great fun to work on and I even managed to fit a few christmas 'beverages' in.

Big thanks to the guys at Olson Agency who put the work my way again. The LA festival has just finished and Ive not yet managed to get my hands on many photos but will be scouring the internets for some. Hopefully I'll get the chance to work on this again, would be great to get a trip out to LA to see the work in action ... hey Target? Hmmm?

Unused My Pal Scout pitch

While wandering around the darker recesses of my hard drive I stumbled across an old piece I pitched for some licenced merchandise work based on Leapfrog's My Pal Scout line of characters, unfortunately I didn't get chosen for the job.

Some bits and pieces from a few different projects earlier in the year. Mascot design, achievement badges for a charity-based social networking site and some disco zombies...

Sticker Factory - Ipad Game

Heres some work from an iPad game I worked on for the guys at WorryFreeLabs back in Spring and never got round to posting on here.
The game is a lot of fun, you have to match up the stickers on the constantly scrolling sticker sheets to the relevant outlines on the conveyor belt.I developed the stickers, backgrounds and titles for each level and the splash screen illustrations. If you have an iPad go and download yourself a copy via itunes.
Here are some level sticker sheets and splash screen design ...

Nursery Mural

Heres part of a mural I painted in our nursery for baby Finn a couple of months ago. Painting at that scale was a lot different to how I usually work and was a tricky and messy learning curve.
